How Often Should I See My Doctor for Primary Care?

  • Hypertension (High blood pressure): Every 6 months if well controlled, every 1-3 months if not in control.

  • Diabetes check-ups: every 1-2 months (poorly controlled), every 3 months (Fair control), every 6 months (well controlled); HbA1c testing every 3-6 months.

  • Hyperlipidemia (High cholesterol): Every 3 months if not controlled. Every 6-12 months if well controlled.

  • Depression / Anxiety: Every 3-6 months if well controlled. More often if needed.

  • Osteoporosis (Bone loss): Dexa Bone Density Scan after age 65, every 1-2 years, or earlier if indicated.

  • Asthma / COPD: Check-ups: every 3-6 months if stable, monthly if uncontrolled or if rescue inhaler use exceeds 2 times/month. Yearly Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) are recommended.

  • Thyroid Disease: Every 6 months if controlled. Every 8 weeks with medication changes.

  • Physical Adult Exams: Annual visits focused on illness prevention, including screenings like Pap smears, mammograms, and health advice.

  • Flu Vaccine: is an inactivated influenza vaccine, recommended annually during flu season. Pregnant individuals, or those with a severe allergic reaction to the vaccine, or with egg allergies, should not be vaccinated.

  • Pneumonia Vaccine: Prevnar 20 (Pneumococcal 20-valent Conjugate Vaccine), can be given to adults age 50 and older.

  • Shingrix Vaccine: is not a live virus vaccine, given for prevention of shingles (Herpes Zoster) in adults age 50 and older, (2 doses 2-6 months apart). Per current data, reduces risk by 90% for at least 10 years, (no data available for longer period). Safe in patients with multiple chronic diseases.
